Good news for the LeMons car. One of my team mates can potentially get a chevy small block and a TH400.
He said the trans might need work. It's got a manual valve body conversion that he said wasn't shifting properly and thinks it is just the shifter.
How does the gear selector on one of these actually select gears? Can I build my own? Is it small rotations by the large circular piece in the picture?

a TH400 has a little shaft that comes out the drivers side down low near the pan that is keyed so an arm can slide on. that arm moves back and forth to select the gears. I have never messed with a manual valve conversion auto though so I don't know what has been changed inside of the case.
here is a lokar shifter example of how it shifts

No, dig deeper and you'll find the valves
This is a TH350 Valve Body, the round thing is the accumulator.

A manual valve body works like it's named. You manually select gears and there is no automatic capability.
There are two types:
Regular pattern- PRN321
Reverse pattern- PRN123
IF , and this is a big IF, it was installed properly it may just be the previous owner not knowing what pattern the valve body was set up for and being confused at the 1 and 3 gear locations.
If your teammate can, get whatever paperwork you can get for anything you buy.
Regarding the shifter, you can use any standard 3 speed GM shifter from what I remember.
Personally I'd try and find an aftermarket one with no button or handle to change gears, like a B&M Pro Ratchet. Having to press a button or pull a handle will be a royal pain in the balls during an endurance race.
